A randomized open comparative cross-over trial was carried out in 20 postmenopausal women, mean age 69 years, suffering from urinary incontinence due to urethral sphincteric insufficiency. They were treated with phenylpropanolamine (PPA) 50 mg p.o. twice daily or estriol vaginal suppositories 1 mg daily separately and in combination for periods of 4 weeks.
