Abstract The measurement of the degree of urbanization, the definition of urban places and the concept of overurbanization are considered briefly. The idea that urban growth must invariably be associated with profound economic and social changes is criticized, since it is clear that some aspects of urban society are not universal when viewed historically and regionally.
