In this talk I show that it is possible to find an upper bound on the total proton lifetime. I conclude that the simplest realistic non‐supersymmetric grand unified theory is based on SU(5) with a Higgs sector composed of 5H, 24H and 15H. I discuss the possibility to test this GUT scenario at the next generation of proton decay experiments and future colliders through the production of light scalar leptoquarks.
