Low levels of HDL cholesterol are a significant predictor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular events. HDL is believed to protect against atherosclerosis by promoting reverse cholesterol transport, and potentially through anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antithrombotic and nitric oxide effects.
