TLDR
One of the greatest tensions for those who love older people is that the authors see in clinical settings a widespread and perverse tendency to ignore this complexity and richness in Favor of a deadening simplification, neglecting the many components of care of older people in favor of single-organ diagnosis.
Medical humanities--serious academic pursuit or doorway to dilettantism?
TLDR
The discipline often suffers from a lack of clear definition in terms of scope, purpose and clinician engagement, and as yet rarely attracts the degree of postgraduate and research activity generally associated with substantive academic disciplines.
