During meiotic maturation or after fertilization of invertebrate and vertebrate oocytes, many of the quiescent stored mRNAs are recruited into polysomes. In the clam, Spisula solidissima, such masked messages include the abundant mRNAs encoding cyclin A and the small subunit of ribonucleotide reductase.
