TO THE EDITOR: I read Hinman and colleagues' article (1) with interest. In 1905, Hoffman (2) compared the feet of barefoot and shoe-wearing populations. He found that, if you wear shoes, your first toe is deformed from the natural state by being deviated laterally. I attended a lecture in the 1970s that described this deformity and linked it to foot pain. Since then, I have advised my patients with foot pain and deformed toes to wear shoes that give their toes more space, to good effect. D'Aot… CONTINUE READING
