Single unit activity was studied in the dorsomedial edge of the frontal lobe, above the superior arcuate sulcus in three trained monkeys (Macaca nemestrina). Gaze and head movements were recorded with two magnetic search coils. Discharges preceding spontaneous eye movements in a preferred direction were consistently observed in light and in dark, in a limited cortical territory at the anterior border of the supplementary motor area.
