Ideal ring resonators are characterized by travelling-wave counterprop-agating modes, but in practice travelling waves can only be realized under unidirectional operation, which has proved elusive. Here, we have designed and fabricated a monolithic quantum cascade ring laser coupled to an active waveguide that allows for robust, deterministic and controllable unidirectional operation. Spontaneous emission injection through the active waveguide enables dynamical switching between the clockwise…

Semiconductor ring laser frequency combs with active directional couplers
Rapid development of Fabry-Perot quantum cascade laser frequency combs has converted them from laboratory devices to key components of next-generation fast molecular spectrometers. Recently,

A unidirectional quantum cascade ring laser
We report on the design, fabrication, and characterization of a unidirectional quantum cascade ring laser operating at a wavelength of around 3.4 μm at 200 K. A unidirectional operation is achieved
External ring-cavity quantum cascade lasers
An external ring-cavity quantum cascade laser (QCL) is demonstrated. Gain competition between the clockwise and anticlockwise ring-cavity modes results in a transition from bidirectional to
Random optical pulse generation with bistable semiconductor ring lasers.
It is experimentally shown that a random optical pulse train can be generated by modulating a bistable semiconductor ring laser and it is shown that it is possible to generate optical pulse sequences which pass a standard suite of statistical randomness tests.
Active mode locking of quantum cascade lasers in an external ring cavity
The demonstration of active mode locking of an external-cavity quantum cascade laser that operates in the mode-locked regime at room temperature and over the full dynamic range of injection currents is reported.
Bistability and All-Optical Switching in Semiconductor Ring Lasers
It is found that the bistability is induced by cross-gain saturation of the two counterpropagating modes of semiconductor ring lasers by means of a two-modes rate equations model.
Operating regimes of GaAs-AlGaAs semiconductor ring lasers: experiment and model
Theory and experiments of single-mode ridge waveguide GaAs-AlGaAs semiconductor ring lasers are presented. The lasers are found to operate bidirectionally up to twice the threshold, where
Dissipative Kerr solitons in semiconductor ring lasers
Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-organized optical waves arising from the interplay between Kerr effect and dispersion. They can form spontaneously in nonlinear microresonators pumped with an
Unidirectional bistability in semiconductor waveguide ring lasers
Large-diameter ridge-guided semiconductor lasers weakly coupled to a straight output waveguide show unidirectional operation and directional bistability at currents up to about twice the threshold.

Frequency combs based on quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are very attractive for dual comb spectroscopy, with continuous improvement in their performance. Average powers of ∼1 Watt and frequency
Multimode regimes in quantum cascade lasers: From coherent instabilities to spatial hole burning
A theoretical and experimental study of multimode operation regimes in quantum cascade lasers QCLs is presented. It is shown that the fast gain recovery of QCLs promotes two multimode regimes: One is
