We perform statistical mechanics calculations to analyze the global phase diagram of a fully connected version of a Maier-Saupe-Zwanzig lattice model with the inclusion of couplings to an elastic strain field. We point out the presence of uniaxial and biaxial nematic structures, depending on temperature T and on the applied stress σ. Under uniaxial extensive tension, applied stress favors uniaxial orientation, and we obtain a first-order boundary along which there is a coexistence of two… Expand

Elastic Maier-Saupe-Zwanzig model and some properties of nematic elastomers.
TLDR
A simple mean-field lattice model to describe the behavior of nematic elastomers is introduced, and it is shown that random fields may soften the first-order transition between nematic and isotropic phases, provided the samples are formed in the nematic state. Expand
Lattice Statistical Models for the Nematic Transitions in Liquid-Crystalline Systems

Field-Induced Order in Nematic Liquid Crystals
Abstract The effect of an external magnetic field on the orientational order of a nematic liquid crystal has been examined using both Landau-de Gennes and Maier-Saupe theories. In the Maier-SaupeExpand
Phase diagram of a model for a binary mixture of nematic molecules on a Bethe lattice.
TLDR
Both thermodynamic and dynamic-stability analyses rule out the presence of a biaxial phase in a discrete version of the Maier-Saupe model, in qualitative agreement with previous mean-field results. Expand
Phase diagrams of semisoft nematic elastomers.
TLDR
The global phase diagram for a minimal model is calculated, and it is shown that semisoft behavior is associated with a broken symmetry biaxial phase and that it persists well into the supercritical regime. Expand

TLDR
A lattice statistical model is proposed to investigate the phase diagrams and the soft responses of nematic liquid-crystal elastomers, finding a peculiar phase diagram, in terms of temperature and the diagonal component of the distortion tensor along the stretching direction, with first- and second-order transitions to the soft phase. TLDR
Director textures and alignment of polydomain nematic elastomers under uniaxial extension are described theoretically applying the concept of randomly quenched disorder introduced by network cross-links to show qualitative agreement with model predictions. Expand
Modeling and simulation of liquid-crystal elastomers.
TLDR
A continuum model describing the dynamic behavior of nematic liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) is considered and a numerical scheme to solve the governing equations is implemented using an implicit-explicit scheme and the Chebyshev polynomial method. Expand
Phase Behaviour of Nematics in the Presence of Electric and Magnetic Fields
Abstract We employ mean field theory to study the phase behaviour of nematics in the presence of arbitrary electric and magnetic fields. A rotationally invariant pseudopotential is used. If theExpand
