Abstract The smelting of nickel laterite ores to ferronickel alloy is unique in extractive metallurgy. It treats feed that is very low grade with respect to the target metal and, as a result, produces much more waste slag than valuable metal product. The energy consumption per tonne of product is therefore high and requires sustained research and design development in an effort to improve the economics of laterite smelting. In this work, the main characteristics of nickel laterite smelting are…
Understanding ferrovanadium smelting through computational thermodynamics modelling
Ferrovanadium is essential for the production of many alloy steels. It is made by the aluminothermic reduction of vanadium oxides, together with scrap steel and burnt lime as a flux at very high
Thermodynamic model of metallothermic smelting of ferromolybdenum
ABSTRACT Ferromolybdenum, used in alloy steel production, is made by the batch reduction of molybdenum oxide by silicon and aluminium at high temperatures. In this work, the technology of the process
Thermodynamics of the Reduction Roasting of Nickeliferous Laterite Ores
The global nickel sulphide resources are becoming more difficult to mine and, as a result, there is increasing interest in the current and future development of the oxidic nickel laterite deposits.
Smelting Reduction of Spent Catalyst Containing Nickel: A Preliminary Study
The aim of this research was to study the recycling process and the feasibility to smelt the spent nickel catalyst for the production of nickel alloy or ferronickel. The smelting process was carried
Smelting of difficult laterite ores
Abstract The favourable physicomechanical characteristics of nickel have resulted in its wide application in various products, around 2m t year−1. Nickel is an essential alloying element in
A Thermodynamic Study of the Reduction of a Limonitic Laterite Ore by Methane
Abstract The recovery of nickel from the oxidic nickeliferous laterite ores is receiving increasing attention due to the difficulty of recovering this metal from the sulphide ore deposits. One

A computational thermodynamics model of submerged arc electric furnace ferromanganese smelting
Abstract Most manganese used in the world is consumed as ferroalloys by the steelmaking industry. Submerged arc electric furnace smelting using the manganese-rich slag method is widely used to
Smelting of Laterite Ores to Ferronickel
Slag phase equilibria and viscosities in ferronickel smelting slags
The properties of the slag phase are critical to the smooth operation of ferronickel smelting operations. Phase equilibria studies have been carried out on the "FeO"-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 system in
Understanding stainless steelmaking through computational thermodynamics Part 1: electric arc furnace melting
Abstract Stainless steel alloys are widely used in many important applications but their production presents difficulties because they contain expensive chromium, which can be extensively oxidised
Computational Thermodynamics Modeling of Minor Element Distributions During Copper Flash Converting
Continuous copper converting processes are replacing traditional Peirce-Smith converters because they overcome most of the difficulties associated with this old batch technology. Most notably, they
An analysis of slag stratification in nickel laterite smelting furnaces due to composition and temperature gradients
The density of FeO-MgO-SiO2 and FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 based slags has been analyzed in terms of smelting of lateritic ores for the production of ferronickel. The density of these slags decreases with
SNNC, Société du Nickel de Nouvelle Calédonie et Corée, started up its new ferronickel smelter in the third quarter of 2008, and in early 2009 completed ramp-up of the furnace to its full design
Nickel production from low-iron laterite ores: Process descriptions
Process descriptions are provided for the following ten plants that treat high-magnesia lateritic nickel ores (saprolite) by pyrometa/lurgical means: PT Aneka Tambang; Cerro Matoso S.A.; Falconbridge
The past and the future of nickel laterites
Production of nickel from laterite ores has occurred for over 100 years beginning with processing of garnieritic ores from New Caledonia. However, until now the world nickel supply has been
