George Eliot is a great novelist in the Victorian Age. This paper attempts to find the thesis of her autobio-graphical works and masterpiece──The Mill on the Floss, through analysis of its characterization and the author' s ideas of creaion: the onnipresent inner plights through life, the cornplicated human nature, various personalities determined by the environment, education and heredity, all of which lead to the author's yearning for understand- ing, tolerance and harmony in human relations.
