Although the main bibliometric databases (Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus) claim to includejournals on the basis of scientific and publication standards, there have long been concerns thatits coverage is biased in favour of journals from industrialised countries and towards topicsrelevant to these countries. In this article, we investigate this claim for research on rice, comparing the database CAB Abstracts with the mainstream databases. We find clear evidencethat for a field such as rice…

Universalism and particularism: explaining the emergence and growth of regional journal indexing systems

The findings indicate that disciplinary, linguistic, and geographical biases in the coverage of mainstream JIS motivated the development of Scielo and RedALyC, and this thesis addresses a significant gap in the sociology of science by studying new authorities in the science communication system.

To What Extent is Inclusion in the Web of Science an Indicator of Journal 'Quality'?

The assessment of research based on the journal in which it is published is a widely adopted practice. Some research assessments use the Web of Science (WoS) to identify ‘high quality’ journals,

An overview of the Web of Science record of scientific publications (2004–2013) from Nepal: focus on disciplinary diversity and international collaboration

The available data suggest that significant advances were made in higher education sector in both fields during the last 25 years, and Nepal’s publication profile is inferred to be a hybrid of the ‘bio-environmental’ and ‘western’ models.

Overton: A bibliometric database of policy document citations

Analysis of the Overton policy document database shows that for some research topics, Overton contains a core set of policy documents with sufficient citation linkage to academic literature to support various citation analyses that may be informative in research evaluation, impact assessment, and policy review.

Google Scholar as a data source for research assessment

It is concluded that Google Scholar presents a broader view of the academic world because it has brought to light a great amount of sources that were not previously visible.

Can bibliometrics help in assessing societal contributions of agricultural research? Exploring societal interactions across research areas

We explore whether and how mapping bibliometric methods combined with other data sources (mentions in news and policy) can also be useful for mapping potential societal engagement of research fields.

The Evolution of Scientific Trajectories in Rice: Mapping the Relation between Research and Societal Priorities 1

How do specific technologies emerge? How is the scientific research related to technologies prioritised, in governments, firms, universities, and other actors involved in research? Related to these

Citation Analysis May Severely Underestimate the Impact of Clinical Research as Compared to Basic Research

Popular bibliometric indicators, such as the h-index and the impact factor, do not correct for differences in citation practices between medical fields, and cannot be used to make accurate between-field comparisons.
