We present K' (2.1 μm) observations of four nearby flocculent spirals, which clearly show low-level spiral structure and suggest that kiloparsec-scale spiral structure is more prevalent in flocculent spirals than previously supposed. In particular, the prototypical flocculent spiral NGC 5055 is shown to have regular, two-arm spiral structure to a radius of 4.0 kpc in the near-infrared, with an arm-interarm contrast of 1.3. The spiral structure in all four galaxies is weaker than that in grand…
Spiral arm properties of 46 galaxies in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) were measured at 3.6 μm, where extinction is small and the old stars dominate. The sample includes
Are Flocculent Spirals Devoid of Density Waves? Gas Morphology and Kinematics in NGC 5055
We present interferometric observations of CO and H I in the prototypical flocculent spiral NGC 5055, which has recently been shown to exhibit weak, two-arm spiral structure in the near-infrared. The
Dynamic and Stochastic Influences on Spiral Structure in the Flocculent Spiral NGC 4414
We present new Hα, CO, and H I images of the high gas surface density flocculent spiral NGC 4414 and compare them to recently published near-infrared observations that reveal kiloparsec-scale
K′-Band Observations of Underlying Symmetric Structure in Flocculent Galaxies
Galaxies classified as flocculent have stochastic spiral structure in their stellar disks. Recent observations reveal that some optically flocculent galaxies have underlying, faint two-arm near-IR
Spiral structure in nearby galaxies – I. Sample, data analysis and overview of results
This paper, the first of two, introduces an observational study of spiral structure in galaxies chosen from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). Near-infrared (NIR) and optical data
Circumnuclear Dust in Nearby Active and Inactive Galaxies. I. Data
The detailed morphology of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the central kiloparsec of galaxies is controlled by pressure and gravitation. The combination of these forces shapes both circumnuclear
Arm and interarm abundance gradients in CALIFA spiral galaxies
Spiral arms are the most singular features in disc galaxies. These structures can exhibit different patterns, namely grand design and flocculent arms, with easily distinguishable characteristics.
Spiral structure in nearby galaxies – II. Comparative analysis and conclusions
This paper presents a detailed analysis of two-armed spiral structure in a sample of galax- ies from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), with particular focus on the relationships
A Turbulent Origin for Flocculent Spiral Structure in Galaxies. II. Observations and Models of M33
Fourier transform power spectra of azimuthal scans of the optical structure of M33 are evaluated for B, V, and R passbands and fitted to fractal models of continuum emission with superposed star
Nobeyama CO Atlas of Nearby Spiral Galaxies: Distribution of Molecular Gas in Barred and Nonbarred Spiral Galaxies
The data from a CO(1 - 0) mapping survey of 40 nearby spiral galaxies performed with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope are presented. The criteria of the sample selection were (1) RC3 morphological type in

The relationship between galacitc spiral structure and the matter in the underlying disk constitutes one of the central problems in galactic dynamics. In Bertin et al. (1989a, b), disk matter
Nonaxisymmetric structures in the stellar disks of galaxies
We study the azimuthal structure of the stellar disks of 18 face-on spiral galaxies, using K-band photometry to trace the stellar surface mass density. Assuming the disks are co-planar, we
We present optical and IR surface photometry of M51 (NGC 5194) at B V R I J K and CO(2.3mu). These data are used to establish whether K-band (2.2mu) images of spiral galaxies provide reliable maps of
Triggering of Starbursts in Galaxies by Minor Mergers
Using numerical simulation, we explore the triggering of starburst activity in disk galaxies which accrete low-mass dwarf companions. In response to the tidal perturbation of an infalling satellite,
New observations of H I rotation curves at the Very Large Array have uncovered two galaxies with rotation curves declining between 1 and 3 optical radii. The velocity decrease is large, more than 50
Triaxiality in disk galaxies
Thirty-two bulges of nearby spirals have been observed, to detect misalignment between disk and bulge apparent major axes. Such misalignment is unequivocally present in the majority of observed
Tracing the stellar mass in M51
We present optical and IR surface photometry of M51 (NGC 5194) at B, V, R, I, J, K, and CO(2.3 μm). These data are used to establish whether K band (2.2 μm) images of spiral galaxies provide reliable
Tidal Arms are Ubiquitous in Spiral Galaxies
Using a self-gravitating disk galaxy tidal perturbation survey, we find that close passages of unexpectedly small mass perturbers can excite grand design spiral patterns. Conservatively, (perturber
Neutral hydrogen observations of a large sample of galaxies.
A sample of 1787 nearby galaxies has been observed in the 21 cm line with the NRAO 91 m and 43 m telescopes and the Bonn 100 m telescope. A total of 1171 galaxies were detected. The radio
