We examine a class of adaptive sampling techniques employed in image synthesis and show that those commonly used for efficient anti-aliasing are statistically biased. This bias is dependent upon the image function being sampled as well as the strategy for determining the number of samples to use. It is most prominent in areas of high contrast and is attributable to early stages of sampling systematically favoring one extreme or the other. If the expected outcome of the entire adaptive sampling…

Adaptive Smpling and Bias Estimation in Path Tracing

A new refinement criterion is introduced, which takes human perception and limitations of display devices into account by incorporating the tone-operator, which can lead to a significant reduction in the overall RMS-error and even more important that noisy spots are eliminated.

Energy preserving non-linear filters

A class of non-linear filters that remove sampling noise in synthetic images without removing salient features are described by spreading real input sample values into the output image via variable-width filter kernels, rather than gathering samples into each output pixel via a constant-width kernel.

This paper shows how to perform a number of such tests to assess random variables that commonly arise in image synthesis such as those estimating irradiance, radiance, pixel color, etc and proves that two random variables stem from the same parent distribution.

A perceptually based adaptive sampling algorithm

A perceptually based approach for selecting image samples has been developed and the resulting new image quality model was inserted into an image synthesis program by first modifying the rendering algorithm so that it computed a wavelet representation.

Density prediction for importance sampling in realistic image synthesis

This dissertation explores new methods based on Monte Carlo integration for generating realistic images of complex environments by using carefully chosen probability density functions to create lower variance estimators, a technique known as importance sampling.

Two stage importance sampling for direct lighting

An importance sampling method to generate samples based on the product of a BRDF and an environment map or large light source and an adaptive method which allocates varying numbers of samples to different image pixels to reduce shadow artifacts is presented.

A Survey of Adaptive Sampling in Realistic Image Synthesis

A survey of various adaptive sampling methods and point out their limitations is presented, which will be addressed in the future research.

Accurate direct illumination using iterative adaptive sampling

This paper introduces a new multipass algorithm for efficiently computing direct illumination in scenes with many lights and complex occlusion that computes accurate direct illumination eight times faster than prior approaches in tests on several complex scenes.

Multidimensional adaptive sampling and reconstruction for ray tracing

The results show that the method uses fewer samples than Mittchell's adaptive sampling technique while producing images with less noise, and the value of each sample is noise-free.

Antialiasing through stochastic sampling

Stochastic sampling techniques allow the construction of alias-free approximations to continuous functions using discrete calculations and can be applied spatiotemporally as well as to other aspects of scene simulation.

Generating antialiased images at low sampling densities

This paper describes a program that focuses on constructing an antialiased digital picture from point samples without resorting to extremely high sampling densities, and an algorithm is presented for fast generation of nonuniform sampling patterns that are optimal in some sense.

Antialiased ray tracing by adaptive progressive refinement

The goals of the system are to produce high quality antialiased images at a modest average sample rate, and to refine the image progressively so that the image is available in a usable form early and is refined gradually toward the final result.

Statistically optimized sampling for distributed ray tracing

In this work, a relationship between the number of sample rays and the quality of the estimate of this integral is derived and the algorithm has been optimized through the use of statistical testing and stratified sampling.

Particle transport and image synthesis

A technique known as Russian roulette is described which can be used to terminate the recursive tracing of rays without introducing statistical bias and it is shown that neither ray trees nor paths constitute an optimal sampling plan in themselves and that a hybrid may be more efficient.

Consideration of all of these factors allows the shader to accurately simulate true reflection, shadows, and refraction, as well as the effects simulated by conventional shaders.

The rendering equation

An integral equation is presented which generalizes a variety of known rendering algorithms and a new form of variance reduction, called Hierarchical sampling, which may be an efficient new technique for a wide variety of monte carlo procedures.
