Case 1. A 54-year-old female was admitted to the hospital complaining of fluid leaking from her umbilical hernia. A diagnosis of Laennec's cirrhosis was made by liver biopsy nine years before, but she had continued to drink alcohol. She had intermittent ascites for three years which was controlled with diuretics and salt restriction but which had become more marked during the six months prior to admission.
