Cholesterol oxidation to cholestenone by resting cells of Rhodococcus erythropolis ATCC25544 was investigated under a computer-controlled ultrasonic irradiation at a frequency of 20 kHz. The optimization of the ultrasound intensity and its mode of application to a stirred bioreactor was first established at a level which preserved the structural integrity of the cells and enabled their metabolic activity.
