By utilizing the large multiplexing advantage of the Two-degree Field spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, we have been able to obtain a complete spectroscopic sample of all objects in a predefined magnitude range, 16.5 < bj < 19.7, regardless of morphology, in an area toward the center of the Fornax Cluster of galaxies. Among the unresolved or marginally resolved targets, we have found five objects that are actually at the redshift of the Fornax Cluster; i.e., they are extremely…

A large population of ultra-compact dwarfs and bright intracluster globulars in the fornax cluster
All the previously cataloged ultracompact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo clusters have 17.5 <b J < 20. Using the 2dF spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, we have carried out
DISCOVERY OF ULTRACOMPACT DWARF GALAXIES IN THE VIRGO CLUSTER
We have discovered nine ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) in the Virgo Cluster, extending samples of these objects outside the Fornax Cluster. Using the Two Degree Field (2dF) multifiber
Globular clusters and dwarf galaxies in Fornax. I. Kinematics in the cluster core from multi-object
Aims. We acquired radial velocities of a significant number of globular clusters (GCs) on wide fields between galaxies in the nearby Fornax cluster of galaxies, in order to derive their velocity
The formation of ultracompact dwarf galaxies
Recent spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the Fornax Cluster reveal nearly unresolved 'star-like' objects with redshifts appropriate to the Fornax Cluster. These objects have intrinsic sizes
Peculiar compact stellar systems in the Fornax cluster
We search for hints to the origin and nature of compact stellar systems in the magnitude range of ultracompact dwarf galaxies in deep wide-field imaging data of the Fornax cluster core. We visually
A search for ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus galaxy cluster
Aim: To extend the investigations of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) beyond the well studied Fornax and Virgo clusters. Methods: We measured spectroscopic redshifts of about 400 compact object
A large population of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Hydra I cluster ?
Aims. We performed a large spectroscopic survey of compact, unresolved objects in the core of the Hydra I galaxy cluster (Abell 1060), with the aim of identifying ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs)
SPECTROSCOPIC METALLICITIES FOR FORNAX ULTRACOMPACT DWARF GALAXIES, GLOBULAR CLUSTERS, AND NUCLEATED DWARF ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES
Various formation channels for the puzzling ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) have been proposed in the last few years. To better judge some of the competing scenarios, we present spectroscopic
Galaxy Threshing and Ultra-Compact Dwarfs in the Fornax Cluster
We have discovered a new type of galaxy in the Fornax Cluster: `ultra-compact' dwarfs (UCDs). The UCDs are unresolved in ground-based imaging and have spectra typical of old stellar systems. Although
A search for ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus galaxy cluster ,
Aims. Our aim is to extend the investigations of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCD) beyond the well studied Fornax and Virgo clusters. Methods. We measured spectroscopic redshifts of about 400

High surface brightness dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster
We describe a search for compact dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the FLAIR spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. We measured radial velocities of 453 compact galaxies brighter than B-T
Compact Stellar Systems in the Fornax Cluster: Super-massive Star Clusters or Extremely Compact Dwarf Galaxies?
Abstract We describe a population of compact objects in the centre of the Fornax Cluster which were discovered as part of our 2dF Fornax Spectroscopic Survey. These objects have spectra typical of
The fornax spectroscopic survey: the number of unresolved compact galaxies
We describe a sample of 13 bright (18.5 < BJ < 20.1), compact galaxies at low redshift (0.05 < z < 0.21) behind the Fornax Cluster. These galaxies are unresolved on UK Schmidt sky survey plates, and
The central region of the Fornax cluster II. Spectroscopy and radial velocities of member and background galaxies

The Ages and Metallicities of Early Type Galaxies in the Fornax Cluster
We have measured central line strengths for a complete sample of early type galaxies in the Fornax cluster, comprising 11 elliptical and 11 lenticular galaxies, more lumi- nous than MB = 17. In
Dwarf elliptical galaxies
AbstractDwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, with blue absolute magnitudes typically fainter thanMB=−16, are the most numerous type of galaxy in the nearby universe. Tremendous advances have been made
Extreme blue compact dwarf galaxies in the virgo cluster
We present CCD images and surface photometry of six "extreme" (especially compact) blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. The photometric parameters of the galaxies are used to study
