Before the discovery of Ugarit, the native literature of ancient Syria-Palestine was unknown to us except in much later Greek sources from the Roman period. All attempts to trace biblical literature back to earlier sources or traditions were based on critical analysis of the Bible itself and comparison with the more remote literatures of Mesopotamia and Egypt or with widespread genres.
