This article discusses the trend toward ad-supported ubiquitous computing as well as the problems advertisers face and how ubiquitous computing can solve them. It mentions that advertising will be the next major application for ubiquitous computing. Ads will support ubiquitous computing, and ubiquitous computing will support advertisers with ad targeting, ad feedback, customer awareness, and privacy.
Foundations for a Mobile Context-Aware Advertising System
TLDR
This paper presents some foundations for the development of a system that will allow context-aware personalized profile-based advertising delivery, by using Bluetooth technology to identify and communicate with customers in a given geographic area, through their mobile devices. Expand
Pervasive advertising: An approach for consumers and advertisers
TLDR
This paper presents a solution based on multiagent negotiation to solve the impasse between advertisers' objectives and consumers' needs in Pervasive Advertising. Expand
Using statistical data for context sensitive pervasive advertising
TLDR
This work investigates the hypothesis that it is possible to deliver relevant advertisements based on statistical data, associated with basic customer information inferred from location, and conducts an experiment comparing the relevance of the advertisements of the approach with collaborative filtering. Expand
Using location to infer user contextual information: A case study on pervasive advertising
TLDR
A model is developed that is able to determine contextual information of the users based on the places they usually go and is used to increase the relevance of delivered advertisements in a scenario of pervasive advertising. Expand
Key Enablers for User-Centric Advertising across Next Generation Networks
TLDR
This book introduces three distinct but complementary enablers that form the Converged User-Centric Advertising System and introduce new features that address the needs of both users and advertisers. Expand
Human-to-Human Interaction: The Killer Application of Ubiquitous Computing?
TLDR
This work thinks that the most promising killer application is already here, but the authors are so used to it that they do not see it, as a perfect fitting of the Weiser’s vision: the Human-to-Human Interaction mediated by computers. Expand
Location-based advertising on mobile devices
Location-based advertising (LBA) allows the delivery of advertising messages to consumers in places that are known for their particular high and positive advertising effect. While LBA is recognizedExpand
CSCoupons: applying context-sensitivity to increase fast food advertising usefulness
TLDR
The preliminary results show context-sensitivity highly increases advertising usefulness, and CSCoupons, a mobile context-sensitive system to deliver discount coupons, is introduced. Expand
The personalized context‐aware mobile advertisement system using a novel approaching detection method over cellular networks
TLDR
A personalized context‐aware mobile advertisement system (PCA‐MAS) over cellular networks is proposed, which contains two new techniques called ADM and CAADTM, which can find some point of interests that a user is approaching and push advertisements that satisfy user's requirement based on the user's context. Expand
AdNext: a visit-pattern-aware mobile advertising system for urban commercial complexes
TLDR
This paper develops a probabilistic prediction model that predicts users' next visit place from their place visit history and demonstrates the feasibility of AdNext by evaluating the accuracy of the prediction model. Expand

An architecture for privacy-sensitive ubiquitous computing
TLDR
Confab provides basic support for building ubiquitous computing applications, providing a framework as well as several customizable privacy mechanisms that allow application developers and end-users to support a spectrum of trust levels and privacy needs. Expand
An Exploration into Activity-Informed Physical Advertising Using PEST
TLDR
Two mechanisms that link activity descriptions with ad content are presented: direct keyword matching using an online advertising service, and "human computation" matching, which enhances keyword matching with help from online workers. Expand

Over the past years, significant developments in mobile technologies and associated economies of scale via mature manufacturing processes have made the construction of ubiquitous computingExpand
Airport Advertising Effectiveness: An Exploratory Field Study
Transit advertising is a growing category of out-of-home advertising and an area that has received little academic attention. A field study was conducted in New York City's LaGuardia Airport toExpand
A Privacy Awareness System for Ubiquitous Computing Environments
TLDR
This work introduces a privacy awareness system targeted at ubiquitous computing environments that allows data collectors to both announce and implement data usage policies, as well as providing data subjects with technical means to keep track of their personal information as it is stored, used, and possibly removed from the system. Expand
Driving consumer acceptance of mobile marketing: a theoretical framework and empirical study
With the emergence of high speed wireless network technologies and the increasing market penetration of mobile phones the global advertising industry’s interest in using this medium as a means ofExpand
The CareNet Display: Lessons Learned from an In Home Evaluation of an Ambient Display
TLDR
The design and in situ evaluation of the CareNet Display, an ambient display that helps the local members of an elder's care network provide her day-to-day care is presented and lessons about how ambient display technologies could be improved are offered. Expand
Place Lab: Device Positioning Using Radio Beacons in the Wild
TLDR
Experimental results are presented showing that 802.11 and GSM beacons are sufficiently pervasive in the greater Seattle area to achieve 20-30 meter median accuracy with nearly 100% coverage measured by availability in people's daily lives. Expand
Using a Live-In Laboratory for Ubiquitous Computing Research
TLDR
The design and operation of the PlaceLab is described, a new live-in laboratory for the study of ubiquitous technologies in home settings that generates sensor and observational datasets that can be used for research in ubiquitous computing and other fields where domestic contexts impact behavior. Expand
Ubiquitous Computing
TLDR
According to Mark Weiser, who is known as the father of ubiquitous computing due to initiating research work at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in 1988, the most profound technologies are those that disappear as he states in his seminal paper. Expand
