Most of mature companies, operating through a certain form of repeat business in producing incremental innovations, have lost their ability to conduct radical or breakthrough innovations. While this is not necessarily a bad strategy for short-term sustainability, this is more questionable for future growth and long-term sustainability. Hence, we present in this paper a new innovation model, named UX-FFE because it combines both User eXperience and Fuzzy Front-End approaches. It is intended to…

Towards radical innovations in a mature company: an empirical study on the UX-FFE model

TLDR
It appears that the operational performance of the upstream innovation process relies on the quality of the social context, intrinsic to the group of co-creators, corresponding to the reported perceived experience, and the UX-FFE model application, therefore, allows optimizing the downstream innovation process performance.

Application of the UX-FFE Model for Optimizing the Performance of the Upstream Innovation Process

TLDR
It appears that the operational performance of the upstream innovation process relies on the quality of the social context, intrinsic to the group of co-creators, corresponding to the reported perceived experience, and the UX-FFE model application, as a consequence, allows optimizing the downstream innovation process performance.

A New Approach Dedicated to the Continuous Assessment and Improvement of a Radical Innovation Capacity within a Mature Company

TLDR
This paper presents this continuous assessment and improvement new approach allowing radical innovation projects to continuously assess and improve the Front-End Innovation process effectiveness and efficiency.

User Experience: How to Drive Innovation on the Fuzzy Front End

TLDR
How user experience will bring innovation to fuzzy front-end is discussed and the participation of users will not only create economic value, but also create emotional and social value, so that innovation can reach a new level.

Comparing Creativity, User-experience and Communicability Linked to Digital Tools during the Fuzzy Phases of Innovation

TLDR
The results reveal that the user experience arising from the tool influences the amount and the quality of the ideas and it is shown that the fewer standardises interactions the tools have, the greater the communicability of ideas.

Evaluating User eXperience as a Means to Reveal the Potential Adoption of Innovative Ideas

TLDR
Limited, early-stage evidence is offered for possible cross-validation of the UX multidimensional aspect of the model by demonstrating that several UX facets, belonging to different dimensions, directly influence the anticipated UX and intention to adopt in the context of eight unique, innovative mobile app ideas.

Effective Identification of Technological Opportunities for Radical Inventions Using International Patent Classification: Application of Patent Data Mining

TLDR
A novel approach for the identification of technological opportunities for RIs, based on the International Patent Classification (IPC), whose design knowledge has not been fully utilized is suggested.

TLDR
An attempt to develop and make professional an innovation engineering based on a recent survey on innovation practice and organizational models led in 28 large companies and the belief that there is a need for a new method in agile management of radical innovation projects in company contexts.

Divergent innovation: Fostering and managing the fuzzy front end of innovation

Early phases of innovation are hardly ever being addressed in a systematic way. We tend to assume that ideas fall like raindrops from the sky. Within the concept of open innovation the number of

How to create and sustain an open and radical innovation capability in the fuzzy front end: the case of Vodafone Group R&D Germany and selected ongoing radical innovation projects

Research has increasingly addressed the question of which capabilities are required to manage Radical Innovation (RI), but so far, a common framework is missing. This paper develops an improved

The Fuzzy Front End of New Product Development for Discontinuous Innovations: A Theoretical Model

The fuzzy front-end of the new product development (NPD) process, the time and activity prior to an organization’s first screen of a new product idea, is the root of success for firms involved with

Learnings from the front end of radical product innovation in mature firms

The activities prior to the formal New Product Development (NPD) constitute the front end of product innovation. There is significant value in mastering the front end of product innovation, but

The Fuzzy Front‐End of Discontinuous Innovation: Insights for Research and Management

In an article by Reid and de Brentani, a theoretical model of the process and structure for the fuzzy front-end (FFE) of new product development (NPD) for discontinuous innovations was proposed. Its

Providing Clarity and A Common Language to the “Fuzzy Front End”

TLDR
Eight companies that were Process Effectiveness Network members of the Industrial Research Institute attempted to collectively determine the best practices of the Fuzzy Front End (FFE) of innovation developed a theoretical construct, defined as the New Concept Development (NCD) model, in order to provide a common language and insights on the front end activities.

Strategies for building radical innovation potential: exploring the role of collaborative creative design methods

In this paper, we present an empirical research on Collaborative Creative Design Methods (CCDM) that are used in response to new environmental challenges which impel firms to revised Radical
