We study the UV properties of a volume-limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster combining new GALEX far-ultraviolet (1530 Å) and near-ultraviolet (2310 Å) data with spectrophotometric data available at other wavelengths. The sample includes 264 elliptical, lenticular, and dwarf galaxies spanning a large range in luminosity (MB ≤ -15). While the NUV to optical or near-IR color-magnitude relations (CMRs) are similar to those observed at optical wavelengths, with a monotonic…

Figures and Tables from this paper

We present ultraviolet (UV) color–magnitude relations (CMRs) of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster, based on Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)
Ultraviolet Color-Magnitude Relations of Early-type Dwarf Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We present ultraviolet (UV) color-magnitude relations (CMRs) for dwarf ellipticals (dEs) and dwarf lenticulars (dS0s) in the Virgo cluster. We used the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) GR3
Near ultraviolet–infrared colours of red-sequence galaxies in local clusters
We present GALEX near-ultraviolet (NUV) and Two-Micron All-Sky Survey J-band photometry for red-sequence galaxies in local clusters. We define quiescent samples according to a strict emission
UV SEDs of early-type cluster galaxies: a new look at the UV upturn
Using GALEX, UVOT and optical photometry, we explore the prevalence and strength of the UV-upturn in the spectra of quiescent early type galaxies in several nearby clusters. Even for galaxies with
GALEX UV Observations of Elliptical Galaxies in Abell Clusters at z < 0.2
We present the GALEX UV photometry of the elliptical galaxies in Abell clusters at moderate redshifts (z < 0.2) for the study of the look-back time evolution of the UV upturn phenomenon. The
The GALEX Ultraviolet Atlas of Nearby Galaxies
We present images, integrated photometry, and surface-brightness and color profiles for a total of 1034 nearby galaxies recently observed by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite in its
Stellar Age versus Mass of Early-Type Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
The flux excess of elliptical galaxies in the far-ultraviolet can be reproduced by population synthesis models when accounting for the population of old, hot, helium-burning subdwarf stars. This has
The GALEX view of the Herschel Reference Survey - Ultraviolet structural properties of nearby galaxies
We present GALEX far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) as well as SDSS g, r, i photometry and structural parameters for the Herschel Reference Survey, a magnitude-, volume-limited sample
What drives the ultraviolet colours of passive galaxies
We present and analyse optical and ultraviolet (UV) colours for passive and optically-red Coma cluster galaxies for which we have spectroscopic age and element abundance estimates. Our sample of 150
The SAURON project - XVIII. The integrated UV-line-strength relations of early-type galaxies
Using far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) photometry from guest investigator programmes on the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite, optical photometry from the MDM Observatory

The far-ultraviolet emission of early-type galaxies
We have assembled a UV-flux selected sample of 82 early-type galaxies and collected additional information at other wavelengths. These data confirm a large spread of the UV V color in the range 2 to
Systematics of the Ultraviolet Rising Flux in a GALEX/SDSS Sample of Early-Type Galaxies
We present ultraviolet photometry for a sample of morphologically early-type galaxies selected by matching the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) First Data Release with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer
UV to radio centimetric spectral energy distributions of optically-selected late-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster
We present a multifrequency dataset for an optically-selected, volume-limited, complete sample of 118 late-type galaxies (≥S0a) in the Virgo cluster. The database includes UV, visible, near-IR,
The far-ultraviolet spectra of early-type galaxies
New and revised ultraviolet energy distributions ar presented based on 97 IUE spectra of 31 early-type galaxies and the bulge of M31. Based on optical spectra and morphology, the sample galaxies are
Spectrophotometry of Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. I. The Star Formation History
As a result of an extensive observational campaign targeting the Virgo Cluster, we obtained integrated (drift-scan mode) optical spectra and multiwavelength (UV, U, B, V, H) photometry for 124 and
We have collected a large body of near-IR (H band), UV (2000 Å), and Hα measurements of late-type galaxies. These are used jointly with spectral evolutionary synthesis models to study the initial
Age and Abundance Discrimination in Old Stellar Populations Using Mid-Ultraviolet Colors
The rest-frame mid-ultraviolet spectral region (2000-3200 Å) is important in analyzing the stellar populations of the "red envelope" systems observed at high redshifts. Here we explore the usefulness
The structure of elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Results from the INT Wide Field Survey
We report on a complete CCD imaging survey of 226 elliptical galaxies in the North-East quadrant of the Virgo cluster, representative of the properties of giant and dwarf elliptical galaxies in this
A Photometric and Spectroscopic Study of Dwarf and Giant Galaxies in the Coma Cluster. III. Spectral Ages and Metallicities
We present a detailed analysis of the spectroscopic catalog of galaxies in the Coma Cluster from Mobasher et al. (Paper II of the series). This catalog comprises ~300 spectra of cluster members with
