UNION OF LIGHT ION CENTERS IN EUROPE The Union of Light Ion Centers in Europe is a 5 years project started on 1st September 2009 focusing on hadrontherapy. hadrontherapy, i.e. the use of particle beams such as protons and carbon ions against tumours. Particle beams can reach the tumour more selectively sparing the surrounding normal tissues. Light ions, as carbon ions, have physical properties similar to those of protons but unique and more favorable radiobiological characteristics.

Radiotherapy with beams of carbon ions
In cancer treatment, the introduction of MeV bremsstrahlung photons has been instrumental in delivering higher doses to deep-seated tumours, while reducing the doses absorbed by the surroundingExpand
RADIOBIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENTS FOR RADIATION THERAPY : EXTENSION TO OTHER IONS *
Introduction A combined proton and carbon machines is used in Heidelberg (HIT) and will be running in Pavia, Marburg, and Kiel. In addition to proton and carbon it might be possible that severalExpand
Heavy-ion tumor therapy: Physical and radiobiological benefits
High-energy beams of charged nuclear particles (protons and heavier ions) offer significant advantages for the treatment of deep-seated local tumors in comparison to conventional megavolt photonExpand
Modelling of the oxygen enhancement ratio for ion beam radiation therapy.
TLDR
The proposed OER model is a simple tool to quantify the oxygen effect in a practical way and provides the possibility to do hypoxia-based biological optimization in treatment planning. Expand
Dose- and LET-painting with particle therapy
TLDR
It is concluded that an additional therapeutic advantage can be achieved by confining the high-LET part of the radiation in hypoxic compartments of the tumour, and applying low-LET radiation to the normoxic tissue. Expand
Treatment planning for heavy-ion radiotherapy: physical beam model and dose optimization.
TLDR
A novel code system, TRiP, dedicated to the planning of radiotherapy with energetic ions, in particular 12C, designed to cooperate with three-dimensional active dose shaping devices like the GSI raster scan system is described. Expand
Ion beam transport calculations and treatment plans in particle therapy
Abstract In this contribution we report on the various calculational steps which are necessary to obtain reliable treatment plans for carbon ion radiotherapy. We start with the description ofExpand
Treatment planning for heavy-ion radiotherapy: calculation and optimization of biologically effective dose.
We describe a novel approach to treatment planning for heavy-ion radiotherapy based on the local effect model (LEM) which allows us to calculate the biologically effective dose not only for theExpand
Rapid calculation of biological effects in ion radiotherapy.
We describe a method for fast calculation of biological effects after ion irradiation. It is an alternative derivative of the established local effect model (LEM) and has been integrated into GSI'sExpand
Biological dose optimization with multiple ion fields.
TLDR
A method to irradiate arbitrarily shaped target volumes with simultaneously optimized multiple fields of fast carbon ions, explicitly taking into account sparing of organs at risk is described, implemented in GSI's TRiP98 treatment planning system. Expand
