Unintended pregnancies occur far too often in the United States, and half occur when couples fail to practice contraception. Improved measures of the continuity of women's contraceptive use, nonuse and switching patterns can help identify ways to reduce unintended pregnancy.
METHODS
A nationally representative sample of 1,978 adult women at risk of unintended pregnancy was surveyed by telephone in 2004. Respondents provided detailed information about contraceptive use and periods of…

Providers could better help women avoid unintended pregnancy by initiating regular assessments of method use difficulties, improving counseling on method choice and pregnancy risk, and identifying and assisting women at higher risk for inconsistent method use because of disadvantage, relationship characteristics or ambivalence about pregnancy prevention.
Do women and men consider abortion as an alternative to contraception in the United States? An exploratory study
- MedicineGlobal public health

Greater efforts are needed to provide women and their partners with a range of method options, to facilitate selection of methods that best suit their needs and circumstances, and to identify and assist users who are dissatisfied or are having difficulties using contraceptives effectively.
Attitudes toward over-the-counter access to oral contraceptives among a sample of abortion clients in the United States.
- MedicinePerspectives on sexual and reproductive health

Interest in a hypothetical over-the-counter oral contraceptive was high in this sample, and this delivery model has the potential to reduce unintended pregnancy among abortion patients.
Contraceptive features preferred by women at high risk of unintended pregnancy.
- MedicinePerspectives on sexual and reproductive health
- 2012
The contraceptive features women want are largely absent from currently available methods, and developing and promoting methods that are more aligned with women's preferences presumably could help increase satisfaction and thereby encourage consistent and effective use.
Prescription Birth Control Access Among U.S. Women at Risk of Unintended Pregnancy.
- MedicineJournal of women's health

One-third of adult U.S. women who have ever tried to obtain prescription contraception reported access barriers, and data indicate that additional factors may still need to be addressed.
Women's knowledge of commonly used contraceptive methods.
- MedicineWMJ : official publication of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin

Long-term contraceptive use pattern is a valid predictor of unintended pregnancy risk and policies aimed at reducing unintended pregnancies should target women who do not practice contraception and those who are sporadic users.
Contraceptive method switching in the United States.
- MedicinePerspectives on sexual and reproductive health

Multivariate analyses of method switching according to women's characteristics indicate that among married women, women without children are less likely than other women to adopt sterilization or a long-term reversible contraceptive (the implant, injectable or IUD).
