On October 29 1992 the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) approved use of the contraceptive injectable Depo-Provera. This approval ends two decades of controversy over the potential carcinogenic effects of the drug as well as its potential for coercive misuse. Depo-Provera which is already used by nearly 9 million women in more than 90 countries is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy for 3 months.
