Two species of smut fungi (Basidiomycota) are reported here for the first time for Panama. Narasimhania alismatis (Doassansiales) was found on Sagittaria guayanensis and Tolyposporium kuwanoanum (Ustilaginales) on Cyperus tenuis, a new species of host plant. The name of the latter fungus is a new combination based on the currently accepted name Ustanciosporium kuwanoanum. This species belongs to the genus Tolyposporium because of sori with peridia, teliospores in balls, teliospores without…

MOLECULAR SEQUENCE DATA ASSESS THE VALUE OF MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS FOR A PHYLOGENETIC CLASSIFICATION OF SPECIES OF CINTRACTIA
AbstractThe genus Cintractia s. l. (Ustilaginales, basidiomycetes) comprises about 40 species of smut fungi infecting Cyperaceae and Juncaceae. These organisms form a phenetic continuum with respec...
Brazilian mycobiota of the aquatic weed Sagittaria montevidensis
TLDR
Preliminary observations of the fungi in the field and in culture suggest that four of these have potential for use as biocontrol agents against S. montevidensis, namely C. sagittariae, C. gloeosporioides, P. alismatis and P. arthrospora.
DIVERSITY PATTERNS OF NEOTROPICAL PLANT PARASITIC MICROFUNGI
Species richness in different groups of microfungi causing disease symptoms on above-ground plant organs is analyzed based on checklists and databases of five tropical regions in the Americas and two
PHYLOGENETIC STUDIES ON NUCLEAR LARGE SUBUNIT RIBOSOMAL DNA SEQUENCES OF SMUT FUNGI AND RELATED TAXA
TLDR
To show phylogenetic relationships among the smut fungi and their relatives, a part of the nuclear LSU rDNA from 43 different species of smut fungus and related taxa was sequenced and two groups of smUT fungi appeared.
Molecular phylogeny of Ustilago, Sporisorium, and related taxa based on combined analyses of rDNA sequences.
Combined analyses of ITS and LSU rDNA sequences were utilized to resolve the phylogenetic relationships of 98 members of the smut genera Lundquistia, Melanopsichium, Moesziomyces, Macalpinomyces,
Phylogenetic placements of ustilaginomycetous anamorphs as deduced from nuclear LSU rDNA sequences
TLDR
Maximum parsimony and neighbour joining confirm the new suprageneric system of Ustilaginomycetes and indicate that the species of Pseudozyma represent anamorphs of UStilaginales parasitizing grasses.
The generic position of Ustilago maydis, Ustilago scitaminea, and Ustilago esculenta (Ustilaginales)
TLDR
Three species of smut fungi of economic importance, Ustilago maydis on corn, U. scitaminea on sugar cane, and U. esculenta on Zizania latifolia, were investigated in order to define their systematic position using morphological characteristics of the sori, ultrastructure of teliospore walls, and molecular data of the LSU rDNA.
A phylogenetic hypothesis of Ustilaginomycotina based on multiple gene analyses and morphological data1
TLDR
The most recent consensus as to the phylogeny of this group is presented and Entorrhizomycetes, ExobasidiomycETes and Ceraceosorales are proposed as new taxa, and the description of Ustilaginomycets is emended.
Resolving the phylogenetic position of the Wallemiomycetes: an enigmatic major lineage of Basidiomycota
TLDR
The Wallemiomycetes includes three species of molds from the genus Wallemia adapted to environments of high osmotic stress, contaminate various foods, cause respiratory disease, and control fungal infections.
Interspecific Sex in Grass Smuts and the Genetic Diversity of Their Pheromone-Receptor System
TLDR
Performing interspecies sex tests, the observed functional plasticity of the PR system increases the potential for interspecific sex, which might allow the hybrid-based genesis of newly combined host specificities.
