We demonstrate a laser ranging scheme that uses a high-frequency modulated beam to achieve subnanometer precision by the combined use of interferometric and time-of-flight measurements. We first describe how the absolute distance is extracted from a two-mode interference signal. In particular, we show that the signal, which presents both optical and synthetic wavelength scales, allows one to achieve nanometer-scale accuracy, despite the significant long-term phase drifts in the 20 GHz detection…

Different from classical double optical path interferometry, we design a mechanism of single-beam interferometry to measure the distance and direction of displacement with the intrinsic accuracy of
Absolute distance measurement using frequency sweeping interferometry calibrated by frequency comb
In this thesis, we implemented a high-precision absolute distance measurement (ADM) system using frequency sweeping interferometry (FSI). The FSI technique requires the frequency tuning range of the
Phase Measurement of a Microwave Optical Modulation: Characterisation and Reduction of Amplitude-to-Phase Conversion in 1.5 μm High Bandwidth Photodiodes
High accuracy and low noise measurement of the phase of a microwave signal requires that spurious contributions are adequately dealt with. In this paper we investigate the power-to-phase coupling in

Many-wavelength interferometry with thousands of lasers for absolute distance measurement.
A new technique for absolute distance measurement with a femtosecond frequency comb laser is demonstrated, based on unraveling the output of an interferometer to distinct comb modes with 1 GHz spacing, which results in a measurement accuracy far within an optical fringe.
High-accuracy absolute distance measurement using frequency comb referenced multiwavelength source.
A new approach to multiple-wavelength interferometry, targeted to high bandwidth absolute distance measurement, with nanometer accuracy over long distances, is proposed, with an accuracy of 8 nm over 800 mm for target velocities up to 50 mm/s.
MSTAR: a submicrometer absolute metrology system.
The Modulation Sideband Technology for Absolute Ranging (MSTAR) sensor permits absolute distance measurement with subnanometer accuracy, an improvement of 4 orders of magnitude over current
Rapid and precise absolute distance measurements at long range
Using two coherent broadband fibre-laser frequency comb sources, a coherent laser ranging system for absolute distance measurements is demonstrated. Its combination of precision, speed and long range
