We study a simple model describing thermal radiation spectra from magnetized neutron stars. The model assumes that a star is nearly spherical and isothermal inside and possesses dipole magnetic fields (B ≲ 1014 G) near the surface, which make the surface temperature distribution non-uniform. We assume further that any surface element emits a blackbody (BB) spectrum with a local effective temperature. We show that such thermal spectra (including phase-resolved) are accurately approximated by… Expand

Model X-Ray Spectra of Magnetic Neutron Stars with Hydrogen Atmospheres
We construct partially ionized hydrogen atmosphere models for magnetized neutron stars in radiative equilibrium with fixed surface fields between B = 1012 and 2 × 1013 G and effective temperaturesExpand
Atmospheres and radiating surfaces of neutron stars
The early 21st century witnesses a dramatic rise in the study of thermal radiation of neutron stars. Modern space telescopes have provided a wealth of valuable information which, when properlyExpand
Thermal structure and cooling of neutron stars with magnetized envelopes
The thermal structure of neutron stars with magnetized envelopes is studied using modern physics input. The relation between the internal (Tint) and local surface temperatures is calculated and ttedExpand
Heat blanketing envelopes and thermal radiation of strongly magnetized neutron stars
Abstract Strong (B≫109 G) and superstrong (B≳1014 G) magnetic fields profoundly affect many thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of dense plasmas in neutron star envelopes. In particular, theyExpand
Thermal luminosities of cooling neutron stars
Ages and thermal luminosities of neutron stars, inferred from observations, can be interpreted with the aid of the neutron star cooling theory to gain information on the properties of superdenseExpand
Surface temperature of a magnetized neutron star and interpretation of the ROSAT data. 1: Dipole fields
We model the temperature distribution at the surface of a magnetized neutron star and study the effects on the observed X-ray spectra and light curves. Generalrelativistic effects, i.e., redshift andExpand
Thermal Structure and Cooling of Superfluid Neutron Stars with Accreted Magnetized Envelopes
We study the thermal structure of neutron stars with magnetized envelopes composed of accreted material, using updated thermal conductivities of plasmas in quantizing magnetic fields, as well as theExpand
Magnetic neutron star cooling and microphysics
We study the relative importance of several recent updates of microphysics input to the neutron star cooling theory and the effects brought about by superstrong magnetic fields of magnetars,Expand
Temperature distribution in magnetized neutron star crusts - II. The effect of a strong toroidal component
We continue the study of the effects of a strong magnetic field on the temperature distribution in the crust of a magnetized neutron star (NS) and its impact on the observable surface temperature.Expand
Thermal radiation from magnetic neutron star surfaces
We investigate the thermal emission from magnetic neutron star surfaces in which the cohesive effects of the magnetic field have produced the condensation of the atmosphere and the external layers.Expand
