Bearing the public image of a deadly “gas of rotten eggs,” hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can be generated in many types of mammalian cells. Functionally, H2S has been implicated in the induction of hippocampal long‐term potentiation, brain development, and blood pressure regulation. By acting specifically on KATP channels, H2S can hyperpolarize cell membranes, relax smooth muscle cells, or decrease neuronal excitability. The endogenous metabolism and physiological functions of H2S position this gas…
Hydrogen sulfide: third gaseous transmitter, but with great pharmacological potential
TLDR
The great potential of H2S as the third gaseous transmitter in cardiac protection is disclosed and it is identified as an important factor in the development of some vascular diseases, such as hypertension.
Signal Transduction and the Gasotransmitters
TLDR
It is hypothesized that H 2S is the third endogenous signaling gasotransmitter, besides nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, and this positioning will open an exciting field-H2S physiology-encompassing realization of the interaction of H2S and otherGasotransmitters, sulfurating modification of proteins, and the functional role of H 1S in multiple systems.
Hydrogen Sulfide Biochemistry and Interplay with Other Gaseous Mediators in Mammalian Physiology
TLDR
The biochemistry, metabolism, and signaling function of hydrogen sulfide, as well as its interplay with the other gasotransmitters, NO and CO, are reviewed.
The Evolution of Gasotransmitter Biology and Medicine
TLDR
S-nitrosylation, carboxylation, and sulfuration may represent mechanisms of direct interaction of NO, CO, and H2S with ion channel proteins, respectively, and exerts significant influence on cellular functions.
Interaction of Hydrogen Sulfide with Nitric Oxide in the Cardiovascular System
TLDR
Current understanding of the individual and interactive roles of H2S and NO signaling in mammalian cardiovascular system is attempted, focusing particularly on heart contractility, cardioprotection, vascular tone, angiogenesis, and oxidative stress.

A novel concept of "gasotransmitter" arrived recently. Gasotransmitters are small molecules of endogenous gases with important physiological functions. Their production and metabolism are
Emergence of hydrogen sulfide as an endogenous gaseous signaling molecule in cardiovascular disease.
TLDR
The current state of knowledge about the actions of H2S within the cardiovascular system is examined with an emphasis on the therapeutic potential and molecular cross talk between H 2S, nitric oxide, and carbon monoxide.

TLDR
The study published in PNAS by Coletta et al. presents an interesting example of how the interaction of gasotransmitters converges at the same downstream molecular target.
H(2)S signaling in redox regulation of cellular functions.
TLDR
The current knowledge of the antioxidant versus pro-oxidant effects of H(2)S in mammalian cells is summarized and the Janus-faced properties of this novel gasotransmitter are described.
Hydrogen sulfide's involvement in modulating nociception.
TLDR
It appears that H2S may regulate key neuronal functions, including the induction of hippocampal long-term potentiation, a synaptic model of learning and memory thought to involve the NMDA receptor as well as the release of corticotrophin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus.

TLDR
It is shown that physiological concentrations of H2S selectively enhance NMDA receptor-mediated responses and facilitate the induction of hippocampal long-term potentiation, suggesting that endogenous H 2S functions as a neuromodulator in the brain.
The vasorelaxant effect of H2S as a novel endogenous gaseous KATP channel opener
TLDR
It is demonstrated that H2S is an important endogenous vasoactive factor and the first identified gaseous opener of KATP channels in vascular SMCs and production from vascular tissues was enhanced by nitric oxide.

Evidence That Hydrogen Sulphide Can Modulate Hypothalamo‐Pituitary‐Adrenal Axis Function: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies in the Rat
TLDR
The addition of NaHS to incubation media was consistently associated with a concentration‐dependent decrease in KCl‐stimulated CRH release, whereas basal secretion was unaffected, and SAMe showed no effect on hypothalamo‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) function under resting conditions, but inhibited stress‐related glucocorticoid increase.

TLDR
Physiological concentrations of H(2)S selectively enhance NMDA receptor-mediated currents and facilitate the induction of hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) in brain cells, neuronal and glial cell lines, and Xenopus oocytes are shown.
Toxicology of hydrogen sulfide.
TLDR
New approaches to therapy are required, such as the use of agents that actively remove sulfide from its sites of action, which may prove more useful in preventing some of the long-term adverse sequelae than theUse of nitrites and hyperbaric O2, although the latter should be used in cases of pulmonary edema.
Sulfur reduction by human erythrocytes.
TLDR
Using cell lysates, production of H2S occurred after addition of either glutathione, NADH, or NADPH, and is consistent with an evolutionary relationship between eukaryotic cytoplasm and sulfur-reducing Archaea.

Hydrogen sulfide in combination with taurine or cysteic acid reversibly abolishes sodium currents in neuroblastoma cells.
TLDR
The responses to NaHS and taurine, a putative neurotransmitter/neuromodulator, suggest that reductions in sodium channel function may be the mechanism(s) responsible for loss of central respiratory drive during H2S poisoning.
