Phototherapy is the most widely applied treatment in newborn medicine. Following its serendipitous discovery in the 1950s (1), many clinical trials have addressed its application to neonatal jaundice. Given the 50+ years of research efforts, it might be reasonable to assume that we know most of what we need to know about the physics, biochemistry and clinical application of this tool.
