OBJECTIVE To describe changes in aged care residents' dependency over a 20-year period. DESIGN All residents in 1988, 1993, 1998, and 2008 were assessed using the same 23-item functional ability survey. SETTING Residential aged care facilities in Auckland, New Zealand. PARTICIPANTS In 1988 there were 7516 participants (99% response rate), 6972 in 1993 (85% response rate), 5056 in 1998 (65% response rate), and 6828 in 2008 (89% response rate).
