This technical note looks at several attempts to machine parts coated with Ni5Al thermal spray. This coating is used in the overhaul and repair of gas turbine components. Machining the thermal sprays to achieve the dimensional tolerances and surface finish is needed. Turning tests were performed with small carbide inserts and with CBN. A study was made of tool performance and cutting process. In this way, tool life, wear mechanism, chip formation process, and actual roughness of turned parts… Expand
Influence of the cutting parameters on the surface properties in turning of a thermally sprayed AlCoCrFeNiTi coating
Abstract High-entropy alloys (HEAs) represent a comparably novel class of materials composed of approximately equimolar fractions of at least four chemical elements. Applied by thermal spraying, theExpand
Influence of the cutting direction angle on the tool wear behavior in face plunge grinding of PcBN
Abstract Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) is a highly wear resistant material. Due to its high hardness this material is typically machined with diamond grinding tools. The high hardnessExpand
Influence of Thermochemical Treatment on the Surface Properties of Finish Turned Wire Arc Sprayed 17Cr Steel Coatings
Structural features of thermal spray coatings, e.g., porosity, can be beneficial as oil retention volumes in tribological systems in order to improve emergency running properties. While thermal sprayExpand
Review on Mechanical Thermal Properties of Superalloys and Thermal Barrier Coating Used in Gas Turbines
This paper describes the manufacturing method and properties of a superalloy as a gas turbine blade material and a thermal barrier coating to protect it. The development process of superalloy andExpand
Machinability Study of Stir Cast Hypoeutectic Aluminum-Silicon Alloys During Turning
The influence of Be and Cd (iron correctors) on mechanical properties and machining behavior of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy (Al-7Si-0.5Mg-1.2Fe) processed by conventional and semi-solid metal (SSM)Expand
On machinability and surface integrity in subsequent machining of additively-manufactured thick coatings: A review
Abstract The present work identifies a research review on the machinability and surface integrity issues in subsequent machining of additively-manufactured thick coatings. The challenges inExpand
A novel cBN composite coating design and machine testing: A case study in turning
Abstract A composite coating series based on nano- and micro-sized cubic born nitride particulates and choice of application-specific binders were developed for turning engineering materials. TheExpand
