Significance Our work has revealed the nature of local chemical order and has established its significant relationship to the intrinsic and extrinsic stacking fault energy in CrCoNi medium-entropy solid-solution alloys, whose combination of strength, ductility, and toughness properties approaches the best on record. These findings highlight the general need to discern how critical the role of local chemical ordering is in dictating the mechanical of properties of medium- and high-entropy alloys…

Chemical Short-Range Ordering in a CrCoNi Medium-Entropy Alloy

: The exceptional mechanical strengths of medium/high-entropy alloys have been attributed to hardening in random solid solutions. Here, we evidence non-random chemical mixings in CrCoNi alloys,

Impact of Chemical Fluctuations on Stacking Fault Energies of CrCoNi and CrMnFeCoNi High Entropy Alloys from First Principles

This work investigates the impact of the compositional fluctuations in the vicinity of stacking faults for two prototype fcc MEAs and HEAs, namely CrCoNi and CrMnFeCoNi by employing first-principles calculations and reveals the dependence of the intrinsic SFEs on local chemical fluctuations reveals a highly non-linear behavior.

Verification of Short-Range Order and Its Impact on the Properties of the CrCoNi Medium Entropy Alloy

Traditional metallic alloys are mixtures of elements where the atoms of minority species tend to distribute randomly if they are below their solubility limit, or lead to the formation of secondary

Subtle Variations of the Electronic Structure and Mechanical Properties of High Entropy Alloys With 50% Carbon Composites

Binary and ternary transition metal carbides are stable ceramic crystals with outstanding mechanical properties. In recent years, multicomponent single-phase high entropy alloys enjoyed explosive

Chemical Short Range Order Strengthening in a Model FCC High Entropy Alloy

Abstract In order to understand the role of chemical short-range order on deformation mechanisms in FCC compositionally complex alloys, a random model alloy (Co30-Fe16.67-Ni36.67-Ti16.67) is annealed

Magnetically driven short-range order can explain anomalous measurements in CrCoNi

This work reveals how magnetic interactions can drive atomic-scale ordering in a mechanically interesting system that has been widely studied as a model for many promising alloys, suggesting that many related materials could contain similarly impactful ordering under standard conditions.

Natural-mixing guided design of refractory high-entropy alloys with as-cast tensile ductility

ARefractory high-entropy alloy was designed with the composition chosen based on the natural-mixing characteristics among refractory elements; this alloy demonstrates good tensile ductility in the as-cast state and physicochemical stability at high temperatures.

Melts of CrCoNi-based high-entropy alloys: Atomic diffusion and electronic/atomic structure from ab initio simulation

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are an emerging class of advanced structural alloys under extensive research; yet, the properties of the liquid states of these materials, which are relevant to their

Nanoscale origins of the damage tolerance of the high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi

A synergy of multiple deformation mechanisms is identified, rarely achieved in metallic alloys, which generates high strength, work hardening and ductility, including the easy motion of Shockley partials, their interactions to form stacking-fault parallelepipeds, and arrest at planar slip bands of undissociated dislocations.

Deviation from high-entropy configurations in the atomic distributions of a multi-principal-element alloy

It is shown that, even when the material undergoes elemental segregation, precipitation, chemical ordering and spinodal decomposition, a significant amount of disorder remains, due to the distributions of multiple elements in the major phases.

Stacking fault energies of face-centered cubic concentrated solid solution alloys

Metastable high-entropy dual-phase alloys overcome the strength-ductility trade-off.

In this metastability-engineering strategy, a transformation-induced plasticity-assisted, dual-phase high-entropy alloy (TRIP-DP-HEA) is designed, which combines the best of two worlds: extensive hardening due to the decreased phase stability known from advanced steels and massive solid-solution strengthening of high-ENTropy alloys.

Polymorphism in a high-entropy alloy

In situ high-temperature synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction experiments at different pressures of the retained hcp high-entropy alloy reveal that the fcc phase is a stable polymorph at high temperatures, while the hcp structure is more thermodynamically favourable at lower temperatures.
