In the course of annealing Eu 3 + or Tb 3 + -doped LGdH multilayers, the unexpected growth of gadolinium oxychloride crystallites is observed through a confi ned crystallization process, which was not expected with any bulk compounds or randomly aggregated nanosheets and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, has never been reported.
