We consider a class of gauge theories in which chiral fermion fields are coupled to gauge fields. If the fermion content does not form a real representation of the gauge group, these theories may undergo dynamical symmetry breaking. In all but the simplest cases the breakdown appears to occur in a sequence of steps leading to a hierarchy of mass scales. This may be related to the hierarchal character of quark and lepton masses.
