We have previously isolated detergent-resistant membrane complexes from lysates of cultured kidney epithelial cells. These structures are enriched in proteins anchored by glycosylphosphatidylinositol, which are localized to the apical plasma membrane of epithelial cells, and have a distinctive lipid composition.
