Migraine is a chronic, recurrent, disabling condition that affects millions of people in the US and worldwide. Proper acute care treatment for migraineurs is essential for a full return of function and productivity. Triptans are serotonin (5-HT)1B/1D receptor agonists that are generally effective, well tolerated and safe. Seven triptans are available worldwide, although not all are available in every country, with multiple routes of administration, giving doctors and patients a wide choice…

Spotlight on frovatriptan: a review of its efficacy in the treatment of migraine

Different pharmacokinetic, but synergistic, properties between frovatriptan and dexketoprofen may make the combination of these agents particularly effective in migraine treatment, with rapid onset of action and sustained effect over 48 hours.

A review of the use of frovatriptan in the treatment of menstrually related migraine

Frovatriptan has now gained a grade A recommendation from the guidelines for short-term prophylaxis of MM, characterized by a more sustained and prolonged effect than other triptans, with the lowest risk of treatment-emergent adverse events.

Efficacy of frovatriptan and other triptans in the treatment of acute migraine of hypertensive and normotensive subjects: a review of randomized studies

HT individuals tend to be less responsive than NT migraineurs to triptan therapy and frovatriptan, in contrast to other triptans, seems to have a sustained antimigraine effect in both HT and NT patients.

Pharmacokinetic evaluation of frovatriptan

Frovatriptan shows a favorable tolerability and efficacy profile, limited to 24/48-h headache recurrence, when compared with other triptans, and preclinical data suggest that the pharmacokinetic profile of frov atriptan may differ from other available triptan.

Frovatriptan: a review of its use in the acute treatment of migraine.

Frovatriptan provides an alternative treatment for migraine, especially in patients who have had adverse events or frequent headache recurrences with triptans or other antimigraine drugs, and who are amenable to adopting an early administration strategy.

Overview of migraine treatment.

The approach to migraine management, currently available acute and preventive pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment options for migraine headache, as well as briefly focuses on novel and upcoming medicines presently under investigation are discussed.

Preventative treatments are numerous and should be considered when migraine attacks are frequent and or disabling, acute medication is failing, in special circumstances such as hemiplegic migraines or if the patient requests them.

Pharmacokinetic evaluation of zolmitriptan for the treatment of migraines

Zolmitriptan has been considered effective treatment in the acute phase of migraine, menstrual-related migraine and cluster headache attacks and pharmacokinetic parameters may vary as a consequence of gender differences, inter- and intra-subjects variability and delivery system.

Sumatriptan (all routes of administration) for acute migraine attacks in adults - overview of Cochrane reviews.

Subcutaneous sumatriptan shows the greatest efficacy in terms of pain relief, but at the expense of relatively high levels of adverse events, and with a high financial cost compared with other routes.

Findings indicate that TN patients can expect excellent symptom control when they progress from non-specific analgesia to treatment with almotriptan and support the earlier use of triptans in line with the stratified care paradigm.

Eletriptan: a review of its use in the acute treatment of migraine.

Eletriptan is generally well tolerated, reduces time lost from normal activities, improves patients' health-related quality of life and appears to be at least as, if not more, cost effective than sumatriptan.

Oral sumatriptan for acute migraine.

Oral sumatriptan has been shown to be an effective drug for the treatment of a single acute attack of migraine and is well tolerated, though minor adverse events were not uncommon in the included trials.

Eletriptan in acute migraine

Eletriptan, at selected doses, demonstrated superior efficacy, onset of action and patient acceptability in the acute treatment of migraine when compared with oral sumatriptan and placebo.

Frovatriptan has a uniquely long-half life, five times that of other triptans, which provides the opportunity to use frov atriptan in mini-prophylaxis such as in menstrual-related migraine and other situations, as well as use in long-lasting or recurrent migraine.

Acute migraine therapy: recent evidence from randomized comparative trials

It is unclear whether triptans offer clinically relevant benefits over aspirin or NSAIDs in migraine patients, so NSAIDs, particularly effervescent aspirin, should be considered the first-line treatment of migraine attacks.

The Triptan Formulations

The clinician has in his/her armamentarium an ever-expanding variety of triptans, available in multiple formulations and dosages, which have good safety and tolerability profiles and it should become possible for the interested physician to match individual patient needs with the specific characteristics of a triptan to optimise therapeutic benefit.

Clinical pharmacology of the serotonin receptor agonist, zolmitriptan

Zolmitriptan is generally very well tolerated and less than half of patients in clinical trials have reported adverse events, most of which are mild and transient, although rare serious cardiovascular events have been reported with all triptans.

Eletriptan in acute migraine: A double-blind, placebo-controlled comparison to sumatriptan

In this placebo-controlled trial, eletriptan, at selected doses, demonstrated superior efficacy, onset of action and patient acceptability in the acute treatment of migraine when compared with oral sumatriptan and placebo.
