Abstract The phosphorescence spectra of the pyrazine molecule and of its mono- and diprotonated forms have been measured in aqueous solvents. Emission maxima occur respectively at: 26 700 cm −1 , 21 600 cm −1 and 24 100 cm −1 . The nature of the excited states involved is discussed, and an explanation of the red-shift of phosphorescence under protonation is proposed in terms of acid-base equilibria of pyrazine in its lowest triplet state.
