Tricyclic compounds have been suggested as potential anti-leishmanial drugs. We have studied the effect of tricyclic drugs on several cellular functions in L. donovani promastigotes. Imipramine inhibits proline transport and reduces delta pH and cellular ATP at relatively high concentrations (IC50 = 50-80 microM).
