BACKGROUND Administrative hospital data can be used to detect trends in the care of patients hospitalized with acute stroke. METHODS The nationwide German DRG statistics for the years 2005 to 2010 were used to identify hospitalizations for acute stroke. All hospitalizations of patients with a principal diagnosis of acute stroke who were over 19 years old on admission were included in the analysis; admissions transferred from other acute care hospitals were excluded.
