One of the least unsatisfactory definitions of literature is the French dictum that it is "an expression of a society. " Without attempting to describe in detail the reality that Haitian literature is supposed to mirror, we may appropriately preface this paper by a brief statement of five fundamental problems which dominate much of Haitian life: poverty, politics, illiteracy, language, and color.
