Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is highly endemic in Kyushu and in some areas of Hokkaido. The major transmission routes of HTLV-I are from mother to child through breast milk and from man to woman through semen. The mechanism of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) is poorly understood. We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue that was positive for antibodies to HTLV-I.
