BACKGROUND Malunion and nonunion of an ankle fusion site are associated with pain, osteomyelitis, limblength discrepancy, and deformity. The Ilizarov reconstruction has been used to treat these challenging problems. METHODS We reviewed the results in twenty-one ankles that had undergone a revision of a failed fusion, with simultaneous treatment of coexisting pathologic conditions, with use of the Ilizarov technique. Eight patients had undergone ankle fusion only, eleven had undergone ankle…
End-stage hindfoot arthrosis: outcomes of tibiocalcaneal fusion using internal and Ilizarov fixation.
TLDR
The results have indicated that combined internal fixation with Ilizarov application can provide a strong surgical option for the management of end-stage, pantalar arthritis.
Treatment of infected nonunion of the juxta-articular region of the distal tibia.
TLDR
External fixator and/or combined treatment are effective and reliable methods to treat infected nonunion of the distal tibia and every patient should be evaluated according to their infection level and bony defects for reconstruction.
Ankle fusion with a retrograde locked intramedullary nail for sequela of lower extremity compartment syndrome.
TLDR
Ankle fusion with a retrograde locked intramedullary nail is an optimal protocol to solve clinical symptoms and rather ensures a definite fusion and firm fixation to these patients with simple manipulation and few complications.
Ankle Arthrodesis Using the Ilizarov Technique in Difficult Situations - a Prospective Study with Mid-to Long-term Follow up.
TLDR
Ankle arthrodesis using Ilizarov technique shows a high fusion rate with no major complications and operative failures even in difficult and complicated situations.
A surgical protocol of ankle arthrodesis with combined Ilizarov's distraction-compression osteogenesis and locked nailing for osteomyelitis around the ankle joint.
TLDR
This study has shown the staged surgical protocol may be effective in solving complicated osteomyelitis around the ankle, although salvaging the limb with successful ankle arthrodesis and minimized limb length inequality, yet improving the patients' ambulation level.
Revision tibiotalar arthrodesis.
TLDR
Revision tibiotalar arthrodesis leads to satisfactory limb salvage in a majority of patients, and ring external fixation may facilitate clinically acceptable limb Salvage in complex cases when methods of internal fixation are limited or even contraindicated.
Clinical evaluation of arthrodesis with Ilizarov external fixator for the treatment of end-stage ankle osteoarthritis
TLDR
In the treatment of end-stage ankle osteoarthritis, arthrodesis with Ilizarov external fixator can achieve good radiological and clinical outcomes with low prevalence of ankle joint malalignment and high fusion rates and satisfaction.
Applications of the Medial Femoral Condyle Free Flap for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction
TLDR
Vascularized bone transfer in the form of the MFC free flap was a valuable method for foot and ankle reconstruction and provided an alternative for those defects that were smaller then 3 cm in length.
Case 56: Gradual Correction of Malunited Ankle Arthrodesis with the Taylor Spatial Frame
TLDR
A 64 year old woman presented with pain and swelling in her right ankle, which had been problematic for the previous 4 years, and underwent ankle fusion for post-traumatic arthritis, but her talus collapsed and a hind foot fusion was then performed with a hindfoot fusion rod.
Conversion of Tibiotalar Arthrodesis to Total Ankle Arthroplasty.
TLDR
Short-term follow-up after conversion of ankle arthrodesis to total ankle ar Throplasty demonstrated pain relief and improved function in a majority of patients.

Treatment of malunion and nonunion at the site of an ankle fusion with the Ilizarov apparatus.
TLDR
In patients with a failed ankle fusion, infection, limb-length discrepancy, and foot deformity can be addressed simultaneously with use of the Ilizarov apparatus to achieve a solid union and a plantigrade foot, usually with a clinically satisfactory result.
A Review of Ankle Arthrodesis: Predisposing Factors to Nonunion
The purpose of this study was to review 15 years of experience with ankle fusions, specifically addressing the underlying etiology of ankle pathology, incidence of nonunion, and associated

TLDR
This study objectively quantifies multiplanar foot-to-leg realignment and defines the optimal clinical and radiographic positions for ankle and tibiotalocalcaneal realignment arthrodeses.
