Non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy commonly impedes the functioning of active persons. Treatment methods vary, as do their results. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy treatment with autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Autologous PRP was injected into the affected Achilles tendon of 14 prospectively selected patients (15 Achilles tendons). Before PRP administration, all patients were evaluated using the American Orthopedic Foot…
Platelet-rich plasma injections for the treatment of refractory Achilles tendinopathy: results at 4 years.
TLDR
PRP injections produced good overall results for the treatment of chronic recalcitrant Achilles tendinopathy with a stable outcome up to a medium-term follow-up.
One-Year Follow-up of Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment in Chronic Achilles Tendinopathy
TLDR
This randomized controlled trial showed no clinical and ultrasonographic superiority of platelet-rich plasma injection over a placebo injection in chronic Achilles tendinopathy at 1 year combined with an eccentric training program.
Ultrasound-guided injection of platelet-rich plasma in chronic Achilles and patellar tendinopathy.
A new treatment method of chronic Achilles tendinitis: PRP trigger point injection
TLDR
Treatment of chronic Achilles tendinitis with autologous PRP achieved good results and MRI results showed significant improvement of the local soft tissue inflammation.
Long-term beneficial effects of platelet-rich plasma for non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy.
Platelet rich plasma injection for achilles tendinopathy
TLDR
In the only available RCT, the mean VISA–A score improved significantly within the PRP, however once adjusted for baseline VISA scores and duration of symptoms, there was no difference between the treatment groups.
Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections in the Treatment of Chronic Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy
TLDR
At 1-year follow-up, a PRP injection was found to be no more effective in improving quality of life, pain, disability, and shoulder range of motion than placebo in patients with chronic RCT who were treated with an exercise program.
Platelet-rich plasma: evidence for the treatment of patellar and Achilles tendinopathy—a systematic review
TLDR
Platelet-rich plasma has been introduced in the clinical practice to treat a growing number of different musculoskeletal pathologies and the clinical data currently available, although not univocal, suggest considering PRP as a therapeutic option for recalcitrant patellar and Achilles tendinopathies.

Treatment of Chronic Elbow Tendinosis with Buffered Platelet-Rich Plasma
TLDR
Treatment of patients with chronic elbow tendinosis with buffered platelet-rich plasma reduced pain significantly in this pilot investigation and should be considered before surgical intervention.
Achilles Tendon and Paratendon Microcirculation in Midportion and Insertional Tendinopathy in Athletes
TLDR
Microcirculatory blood flow is significantly elevated at the point of pain in insertional and midportion tendinopathy and postcapillary venous filling pressures are increased at both the midportion Achilles tendon and the mid proportion paratendon, whereas tissue oxygen saturation is not different among the studied groups.
Achilles tendons: clinical relevance of neovascularization diagnosed with power Doppler US.
TLDR
Although neovascularization is a specific sign for pain, it does not indicate an unfavorable outcome and Conversely, tendon inhomogeneity seems to be associated with a unfavorable outcome.
Neovascularisation in Achilles tendons with painful tendinosis but not in normal tendons: an ultrasonographic investigation
TLDR
In all tendons with a painful nodule, but not in any of the normal pain-free tendons, neovascularisation was seen in the area with tendon changes (localised widening of the tendon with focal hypo-echoic areas).
Achilles Tendon Disorders in Athletes

Posterior heel pain is multifactorial and includes paratenonitis, tendinosis, tend inosis with partial rupture, insertional tendinitis, retrocalcaneal bursitis, and subcutaneous tendo-Achillisbursitis.
Operative treatment of chronic Achilles tendinopathy
TLDR
Patients with Achilles tendinopathies operated between 1980 and 1995 were retrospectively evaluated at an average follow-up of 13 years, finding that most patients were active in competitive or recreational sports and able to return to sport at the desired level.
