BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES High-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are mainly diseases of patients over the age of 60 years. In these patients, intensive chemotherapy and/or allogeneic blood stem cell transplantation are the only curative treatment approaches, while non-curative options include low-dose chemotherapy or best supportive care alone.
