The trends in treatment and outcome of 13,560 patients with pancreatic cancer, and in incidence of the disease, in the West Midlands health region were determined between 1957 and 1986 using data from the West Midlands Region Cancer Registry. Patients were divided into those diagnosed in the first 20 years (1957-1976, n = 7888) and the most recent 10 years (1977-1986, n = 5672).
