The aim of the present study was to critically appraise current conceptual approaches; demographic, neurobiological and clinical correlates; and management strategies of treatment-resistant depression (TRD), especially in light of recent research findings. To this end, a review of the relevant English-language literature was undertaken using Medline, Embase and Psychinfo. TRD has been defined in conceptually restrictive terms as symptomatic non-response to physical therapies alone, with little…

The effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy on treatment-resistant depression
TLDR
CBT led to reducing depression and rumination and improving mood and this outcome was better than control group (P < 0.05); CBT can be a good treatment offer for TRD.
Treatment-resistant depression in adolescents: is the addition of cognitive behavioral therapy of benefit?
TLDR
Overall, there is a lack of evidence about effective interventions to treat young people who have failed to respond to evidence-based interventions for depression, and results from these show modest benefit from antidepressants with no additional benefit over medication from CBT.
Combination Strategies in Treatment-Resistant Depression
TLDR
The results obtained in combination strategies with reboxetine, one of the antidepressants most widely used in combination therapy for TRD in recent years, suggest that it is a potentially useful tool.
Effects of adjunctive reboxetine in patients with duloxetine-resistant depression: a 12-week prospective study
TLDR
The results of this study suggest that the combination strategy with reboxetine may be an effective and well-tolerated tool in duloxetined patients with treatment-resistant depression.
Treatment-Resistant Depression: Understandings on the Neurobiological Etiology that Lead to Novel Pharmacological Treatment Options
TLDR
This chapter discusses the recent findings on neurobiological mechanisms underlying TRD and corresponding novel pharmacological treatment strategies and anti-inflammatory drugs and ketamine suggestions.
Psychosocial treatment approaches to difficult-to-treat depression.
TLDR
The evidence base for psychosocial therapies in difficult-to-treat depression is small, with the research heavily weighted toward biological treatments.
Genetic Markers for the Diagnosis and Management of Treatment-Resistant Depression
TLDR
Recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of Treatment-Refractory Depression are reviewed, with a focus on genetic biomarkers for diagnosis and N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) receptor blockers for treatment.

There is an important and clear need for studies that empirically test current definitions, assessment strategies, and staging methods of TRD, and they currently require extensive empirical support.

TLDR
Chronic depressive disorders are amenable to treatment, provided that intervention is both thorough and intensive, and recent evidence suggests that treatment combining psychotherapy and medications may be superior to either treatment alone.

TLDR
Management of treatment-resistant depression is better served by recent attempts to create a treatment algorithm that encompasses definitive diagnosis of true TRD and strategies for optimizing available therapies, including consideration of novel treatment options.
