}BACKGROUND
The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) has recorded detailed data on fatal traffic crashes since 1975. At least three prior studies have used declining mortality rates derived from FARS as evidence of regional trauma system effectiveness.
METHODS
FARS and census data were obtained at no cost through the Internet. Previously published studies were replicated graphically including data from additional years before and after the previously reported time periods, and with rates…

Examination of all trauma deaths during a 1-year period is hypothesized to provide opportunities to improve care in rural areas and suicide is a significant problem in this rural state that should be aggressively targeted with prevention programs.

The problem cannot be considered solved because there is no national database of the victims of road accidents (register), system for assessing the severity of injuries and recording long-term results of non-fatal injuries, which excludes the possibility to compare the clinical effectiveness of the Russian trauma centers among themselves and with foreign counterparts.

Fatality Analysis Reporting System demonstrates association between trauma system initiatives and decreasing death rates.
- MedicineThe Journal of trauma

The association of decreasing deaths with the implementation of a trauma system seems to have face validity, and the drops in motor vehicle crash death rates may reflect injury prevention as well as trauma system initiatives.

The authors' data indicate that implementation of an organized system of trauma care reduces crash mortality, a finding consistent with the maturation and development of trauma triage protocols, interhospital transfer agreements, organization of trauma centers, and ongoing quality assurance.
