Summary Background: Surgical treatment is the definitive treatment for stages III and IV hemorrhoidal disease. Currently, there is no intervention that can efficiently eliminate postoperative pain and convalescence. It is necessary to study new technologies such as the Harmonic Scalpel that may lower tissue damage and to compare them to a widely used procedure such as Ferguson's technique. Methods: Our sample consisted of 29 randomized patients operated on with either the Harmonic Scalpel or…

Harmonic Scalpel®vs. electrocautery hemorrhoidectomy: A prospective evaluation
The study demonstrates significantly reduced postoperative pain after Harmonic Scalpel® hemorrhoidectomy compared with electrocautery controls, which likely results from the avoidance of lateral thermal injury.
Hemorrhoidectomy: Open or Closed Technique?
Although the healing time is longer, the open technique is more advantageous with respect to shorter operating time, less discomfort in the early postoperative period, and lower morbidity rate.
Office evaluation and treatment of hemorrhoids.
The advantages, disadvantages, and levels of evidence regarding specific treatments for different grades of hemorrhoids are reviewed.
Prospective, randomized trial comparing diathermy and Harmonic Scalpel® hemorrhoidectomy
Hemorrhoidectomy by Harmonic Scalpel® is comparable to diathermy hemorrhoidectomy in terms of postoperative pain and complications.
