The principles of transrectal ultrasound scanning of the prostate and current imaging facilities are reviewed. The ultrasonic anatomy of the normal prostate is described and illustrated. Exact volumetric determination of the gland is discussed, and the ultrasonic presentation of benign hyperplasia is surveyed.
